On the US News tonight they said that microsoft has delayed its launch of the new operating system until next year.

WCF and WWF were already at beta 2. Does any one have any guesses as to why they made the push back and what the potenital implications are for the development community?

I removed my previous comment, I now read on CNet the article about the delay and it's just a few weeks. So I think it's not such a big deal. I didn't expect the OS to appear before the end of 2006 anyway.

Though one thing is an absolute lie: it's not about 'cranking up security even more', that's an oxymoron: security is there or it isn't. You can't just spend a 'few weeks' to make it 'even more secure', not an entire OS. What does 'even more secure' mean? They position Vista as 'more secure' so it's logical they take that spin as the cause, but I don't buy it.

It sorta sounds like you're saying a system is either secure or it's not... bullet proof or not... bug free, or not....

I appreciate every second they put into making sure there are no holes in Vista, but the delays are certainly annoying. On the other hand, at least I can go a few more months before upgrading my computer!

The bit about improving security is as complete lie. They're planning to release it to 'business users' in November, then consumers in January. If security were the problem they wouldn't put out the business version, since so much of it is shared bits.

The truth is found later in some articles, where Gates mentions that retailers and PC manufacturers didn't want Vista in the pre-Christmas mix. It's November release made it too late to properly integrate into the manufacturing cycle and gave too little time to gear up support staff for this Dec. 26th 'how does this thing work' calls.

This is purely a sales decision. The November release (which will appear on MSDN at that time) will be the gold. Go with that.

Yes, because if a flaw is there, it's insecure by default. Or maybe I use different definitions of 'secure' than MS does

heh Well what I wondered was: the MSDN download will still appear on the same date. So that means that whatever work they've to do is apparently not necessary for the MSDN download/subscribers. Which is odd, as that would imply different versions. Perhaps the crap they still have to do is OEM oriented ...

And the OEMs won't appreciate missing a new OS to push machines this christmas.

Just think about it. By shipping WinXP and Office 2003 for all those new Christmas PCs, Microsoft gets the revenues of the two products, PLUS the upgrade fees when it takes customers to Vista and Office 2007 (shipping at the same time as Vista) just a few months later.

Pretty smart, really.
