I notice that the forum has an icon for "new since you last visit" but is there a way to see or know what it unread. As I read stuff during a session the "new since last visit" stays on, which is technically correct, but not very usable as you are reading the forum.

There is no way to see what's unread during a session, unfortunately.

You can also subscribe to the rss feeds per forum if you want, and use an rss reader to read the posts, keeping track of what's read in your reader.
