But wait! I can get a "Intel Pentium D 805 Socket 775 2.66GHz 2MB Cache Retail" for £95, and its dual processor!!! Its a lower overall spec than the AMD, but its dual processor! Just in case I didn't mention - its dual processor !!
I just got two new computers.
A Pentium D 2.8Ghz desktop at work, and a Pentium Core Duo 2.0Ghz at home. Most other specs are the same, 2gb or ram, 7200 RPM SATA hard drives, basic networking etc.
There is no contest, the Core Duo is much faster than the D.
I wanted to wait for the new chips that are just comming from Intel... (Conroe family) but decided not to wait.
At least with Pentium, going from a 2.20 single core to the 2.8 D I don't see "alot" better performance.
So, remember, even though you have dual core, most of what happens with the app you are working on happens in a single thread.
Bottom line, for Desktop I would go with AMD, fastest Dual Core you can get. For Laptop I would go with the Intel Core Duo.
Or, I would wait for the new Intel (Conroe) based desktops to start shipping. The tests I've seen on Engaget and Tom's Hardware show them blowing away the current AMD stuff.
