Anyone else have this issue - SQl Server Management studio is just slow. No getting around it, its sllllllllloooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!

It hogs a lot of memory for my database server, but thats to be expected. I just didn't expect the client tool to be so slow!

Its written in .NET right? Not the best advertisement for the power of .NET if it runs so sluggishly IMHO.

You mean the one that comes with 2005?

I have had those issues for 2000, fast on our 2003 Server, but slow on XP desktops...

Sup, Matt..

I'm running SQLMS on Win XP Pro SP2 on this machine and it's pretty quick. I should tell you though that this is a 2.8Ghz w/ 2GB of RAM and dual 10,000RPM SATA drives.

For a more down to earth scenario, I'm running SQLMS Express CTP on the computer behind me and I wouldn't consider the software slow. The computer is about half as fast too.

I'm running it on a Dell hyperthreaded P4 (3 Ghz) with 1 gig Ram, and its very sluggish to respond. Even rendering the results of a query into a grid view - slow!

Maybe its just me!

If you're running applications on the SQL server consistently, such as the Management Studio, consider limiting the amount of memory the SQL server is allowed to consume. The default is all of it, and it is pleased to do so. By limiting it to a smaller amount you get better performance for applications (with the associated trade-off of loss of SQL memory...)

Specifically, in 2005, choose Server Properties, Memory tab, and change Maximum Server Memory to an appropriate value.

OK, cheers for the info Scott, I'll try playing around with my settings generally.

I do like the client tools, its just that I found them slow to respond in comparison with sql server 2000 - but then I guess it does do a lot more now.

it could be my imagination but periodically backing up the system databases seems to speed up enterprise manager as well.
